El impenetrable, which premiered at Venice International Film Festival, goes deep into director Daniele Incalcaterra’s own struggle to recover some 5000 hectares of virgin forest in the Paraguayan Chaco (the second largest forest after the Amazon) he had inherited from his father. His original intention was to give it back to its original owners: the Guaranì-Ñandeva tribe. But his neighbors (transgenic soy producers and oil companies) do not like his idea.

These are Incalcaterra’s words on El Impenetrable: „What does it mean today to be owner of a land in one of the last frontiers between „civilization“ and „nature“? This question and my role as proprietor allowed me to find the key for making this movie. All the characters shown on the film opened their doors to me not as filmmaker but as proprietor. In a system ruled by economy, I found room for an idea very different from that which sees land as a property to be possessed and exploited, where human lives have no value“.
